AM to PM by Christina Milian

I think this is up there in the so-ridiculous-it’s-perfect list with “Sneakernight.”

ETA: I had some thoughts rewatching this. First, one day I will explain how terrible eighties fashion was to my kids (or the kids of my friends, anyway) and they will see videos like this online and they will not be wrong in assuming the fashion of my youth was way, way worse. I mean, what is she wearing in this video? I don’t think I realized just how bad it is until now. And second, the title of this song makes no fucking sense. It’s about being out all night, which is PM to AM. Being out AM to PM is just being out all day. If you were out all day for I know you were out shopping or at school or whatever. Lord.

YOU’RE RIGHT.

This makes up for the fact that, to get back in the groove, you are just posting (something slightly altered versions of) things I’ve posted in your absence.

Whoa. Didn’t catch this the first time around. Giving me some appreciation of this song.

the fact that this exists is funny, but joe isn’t very good at it. he doesn’t even know the lyrics, it’s disappointing. kevin would have done a better job and you know exactly why

folkinz:kiamatthews: this is a beautiful thing… Joe Jonas dances to Single Ladies.

I like the commitment of the heels despite them not really showing throughout the entire video except when he does a little bit of a kick.

Um. Joe literally looks retarded.

Nina Simone - Feeling Good (this is a great video…all animated text & graphics)

Recently, someone said that had never heard this version of “Feeling Good,” and I might have shrugged (I don’t remember my reaction) but, if I did, I was secretly horrified. This is gorgeous, by the way.

Haha, shut up, that was me. You should have told me you were horrified. This is gorgeous though, and way better than newer versions. … I love the video too.

You’ve never heard this? What? Who covers this song that you’d have heard them before hearing Nina Simone’s?

Whatever. AMAZING SONG AND VIDEO.

I’ve been in love with this song ever since it came to the radio station a few weeks back.

The video seems like it would have been fun to shoot.

This’ll probably sound crazy, but I had never actually listened to “Born in the U.S.A.” until a few days ago. We listened to it in my “Asian Americans and War” class. It’s happened a lot that I’m exposed to those very American cultural items through school. For example, I never watched an episode of “I Love Lucy” or “Leave it to Beaver” until in a class I took in high school. I used to feel like I couldn’t be authentically American because I didn’t know about all this stuff. I used to think I didn’t have access to all of this because my immigrant parents didn’t grow up in America, as if cultural knowledge was inherited through bloodlines. But it probably has more to do with the fact that I didn’t grow up with cable.

This is true. America = cable television.

It’s weird to me that pop music from 1999-2001 is so easily identifiable by sight. It is often that I am watching a video with a friend and one of us will say something like “Oh god, it’s so 2000.” I’m not sure what the defining characteristics would be, but a prevalence of baby blue (or, less popularly, baby pink) seems to be indicative. Some other things you might see include spaghetti strap tanks, midriff baring shirts, khakis, bandannas, and large choreographed dance numbers featuring both sexes that are explicitly made to look like dance numbers.

This video is not the best example of 1999-2001, but I feel it gets the point across. Plus, there is an excellent part where each member of the band is named and described within the song, and the video then caps that with a matching action shot.

For an example of a perfect 2000 video, see Mandy Moore’s “Candy.”

What’s the opposite of a dance craze?

This is just a Holocaust of Dance.
And actually, of music too.
